Blog 1: Senior Project Topic

What is your topic?
Yearbook Design edit: 093011 graphic design

Why?
I've had an active part in yearbook since the seventh grade; at iPoly, I was Assistant Design Editor junior year and now am currently Design Editor. Design has always been something that I enjoyed because I like the feeling of having responsibility in producing something memorable. The design aspect of yearbook, I feel, is one of the most essential part of producing a yearbook because (along with the photos) it is the very first thing people see when they open the book. Design is what makes or breaks the book; a strong design is vital to giving a yearbook its voice. For example, it gives a visually appealing set-up for the photos, draws attention to the entire spread, as well as reflect the overall theme of the book. Though designing can be strenuous process, it gives me a sense of accomplishment because it's truly amazing how one could go from nothing, to a preliminary idea, to the entire look of the book.

What do you hope to accomplish after studying this topic all year?
I want to become a better designer, ultimately. I hope to discover more about graphic design and learn what aspects of design in publications need to be observed in order to make the best impact on the audience. Since last year, it's been a dream of mine to get the iPoly Globe its first National Pacemaker Award. I hope to discover graphic design methods and apply them to achieve said award. This year, as I continue researching and learning more, I hope to help our staff gain that title for the book.
